Share the Worst Job You've Ever Had
It was my first job. I was 20 and had to pack books in a box for a special book club. Not only that, I had to assemble the box first.
What Made This Job Your Worst Job - Ever
I was under pressure to work very fast to keep up with the next person who was slapping address stickers on as if his life depended on it. And so, it was in a way. The boss would come over and grunt, saying that we were not getting enough done every hour. Also, he kept pointing out that there were many who would jump at the opportunity "to step in." I felt like a slave. The pay at the end of the day was dismal. I could not buy many meals with it. This was in the beginning of the seventies and I was a young student with a high rent to pay for one room. Finally, after one week, when the boss came over to complain, I had had enough. I just told him very loudly: "Fine, if you want another slave, get one - I quit." I stomped out very demonstratively and did not wait for my "pay" since the shift had hardly lasted two hours.
Tips and Tricks
- 1. I'd look closer at the job description and
- 2. what the salary was.
- 3. Make a personal visit to check out the work area and the boss.
- 4. Last and not least, I would try to ask those working there about what they thought about their job. Finally, in retrospect, I would not have gone near the place again and left it at that. The one huge mistake I did was to just go there without a clue about the working area or even the exact work I had to do. Just assembling the boxes took time to figure out. Ah, yes, I forgot the most pertinent thing: Work out if the salary was worth my input.
