Advice
- Use IM when you hope for an immediate response, but don't need one. Also use it to ask availability for phone or video discussion.
- Use email when you need to send a lot of info.
- Do not use IM or email to hold a discussion. It will make a 3-minute back-and-forth last 3 days.
- If not physically near each other, use the phone or videoconferencing for discussions.
- If there is a negotiation, mediation, or simply a touchy subject, use video. Seeing each other creates sympathy. Viewing body language and hearing vocal inflections help avoid misunderstandings. Phone/email/IM traditionally increase conflict.
