Culture: Your Environment for People

Wednesday August 27, 2008

People in every workplace talk about organizational culture, that mysterious word that characterizes a work environment. One of the key questions and assessments, when employers interview a prospective employee, explores whether the candidate is a good “cultural fit.”

Culture is difficult to define, but you generally know when you have found an employee who appears to fit your culture. He just "feels" right. Take a look at my major resources about organizational culture.

As a Human Resource Consultant, I think it is dangerous to say “it just feels right” when discussing hiring decisions. I am finding latley that certain “business coaches” are giving my clients advice such as “you just need to hire someone that you like”. This is not good advice and does not promote a diverse workforce.

I believe that the use of employee assessments and other tools are a much better way to determine fit.
