Weekly Poll: Research Candidates at MySpace.com?

Wednesday May 10, 2006
I'm a proponent of serious background checking. I even Google the names and particulars of our finalist candidates. Alison Doyle, About.com's Job Searching Guide, warns job searchers that these checks are becoming more frequent. Beware what the prospective employer is reading and seeing online about you. Take my three polls today so we can explore this topic together.

i wouldn’t look at what a potential employee would write on myspace or any other cyber journal. what an employee writes in their journal is not the employer’s affair. perhaps employees should google and look for cyber writings about employers –

Grace,

Thanks for your comment. I think employees, in this day and age of search capabilities such as Google’s, should search the search engines for news and information about the employer. Many of the people I interview these days already have done this search and come with questions.

Then, there are the clueless ones such as a young guy who arrived for an interview Friday. He wasn’t sure what company he was at nor which job he had applied for. He called for directions twice because it turned out he was looking for the wrong company name and couldn’t find us. Interesting.
