What Makes Your Good Boss - Good
The best boss I had was a man who had very enlightened ideas about how to treat professionals. He believed his job was to "stay out of the way" so they could get things done. He wanted to be a sounding board for ideas, but he didn't like to criticize. Sometimes this worked against him, because some of the professionals who were working for him just didn't get it and they tried to do as little as possible.
The Impact Your Good Boss Has on Your Work
On the whole, I found it refreshing to work for someone who didn't try to micro-manage me or my work or the projects I was working on. I learned that as long as I kept him informed on progress, he was happy.
Tips and Tricks
- The biggest thing I learned in my years of working was, "Never surprise the boss." If something bad happens, tell the boss, so he/she can be prepared and help you figure out what to do. Waiting and hiding bad news can be a bigger problem than the bad news itself.
