Share the Worst Job You've Ever Had

I worked in a "world-renown" athletic shoe store. I REFUSE to give them anymore publicity than they deserve. Not only was the store manager the worst manager ever, the district manager was just as bad and supported the manager - even when it was brought to his attention that the manager was a liar!

What Made This Job Your Worst Job - Ever

The store manager had no tact: he would invite his friends into the back areas of the store and try to demean his full-time employees....and he expected us to not defend ourselves from his verbal abuse. He always claimed to have 3 college degrees (and yet, couldn't form ONE English sentence properly). Yet, one day, I challenged him to use at least one of those degrees! When he approached me demanding that I say that again, I did (word for word) and HE backed down! Underneath, he was a complete CHUMP. A chump with a temporary position.

He always uplift his part-time employees over his full-time staff. They were there for the time being; we were trying to make a career out of the job. He'd get mad at the F/T staff and make us do stock while the P/T staff was chillin' on the sales floor! This hurt the F/T staff as we were paid salary + commissions!

Another time, he claimed to get approval on my vacation via the district manager, even though it was beyond the "use it or lose it" time frame. I later learned (AFTER-the-fact) that not only had he NOT gotten approval for me to go on this vacation, I received no vacation pay, he returned merchandise under my employee I.D. number. When I brought it to the attention of the district manager, he shrugged his shoulders, claimed he had nothing to do with store vacation schedules and walked away.

I had to leave that job because I was either going to get fired and arrested for giving the manager the beatdown of his life or leave with a good record. I chose the latter and I quit at a time that severely inconvenienced him and the store.

Not too many years later, he got his. He was fired for having yet another poor audit. Oh....did I fail to mention that he and his part-time employees were stealing from the store (merchandise and money)??

"What comes around....."

:-D

Tips and Tricks

  • I learned not to take so much nonsense off of anyone.
  • Took example from my present job -- we have a 90-day grace period to see if they like us and they suggest that we take that same time frame to see if we like them.
  • You can't change the way people treat you, but you can change your place of employment.
  • Don't give others too much power over you. Keep your options open.
  • Don't sweat the small stuff.
  • Take your vacations when you want. That's YOUR leave time; not theirs!
  • NEVER ask if you can take some time off. Again, if you have leave, it's only your responsibility to TELL THEM when you're taking it.
