Share the Worst Job You've Ever Had
When I was in high school my aunt married the steward at a private club. He was twenty years older than she, foul tempered and he may have married her to gain the family as employees. Mom told her sister I would be happy to help out. I fed the deer, cleaned fish and kept the boat house neat. Uncle was celebrated for his turtle soup. My job, as fish boy, included killing the turtles netted in the lake. Fifteen years old, standing on a giant turtle, swinging an axe every time the head emerged. Turtles refuse to die, even with the head removed. I hate turtle soup.
What Made This Job Your Worst Job - Ever
Tremendous amounts of fish can be caught by netting. It takes a tremendous amount of fillets to feed eighty guests. Turtles must be killed without delay. They chew through anything to escape. Fish guts are a challenging job to clean up.
Tips and Tricks
- Fish boy was my first job and I was slave labour. I knew I would be sacrificed because my older brother, the previous fishmonger, had found a real job. I delayed looking for work because most of the jobs started before school was out and would interrupt my first romance. A smart kid would have been bagging at a local super market when the club swung into it's prime summer season. Next summer was different. I was working at two places, no girl friend, by the time school was out.
