Share the Worst Job You've Ever Had

I had been layed off from a company where I had worked for 15 years. Being back in the job market was pretty scary, so I ended up taking the first job that was offered to me. It was for an HR Administrative Assistant. The previous admin had just quit, which should have been a red flag for me.

What Made This Job Your Worst Job - Ever

My office was about the size of a closet with dark paneling, no windows, and extension cords running across the floor. To add to the ambiance, a mouse trap was stationed in the corner. My view outside of my door was another wall. It was very depressing.

As I was arranging my desk on the first day, the HR person informed me the international company I now work for, does not have email and asked if I would mind giving her my home email address and she would inform my co-workers so they can send me work related material. I told her I wasn’t comfortable with that and refused.

My manager had set up a meet and greet with various employees so I could find out more about the company. I met with my co-workers and, for the most part, everyone conveyed to me their dislike of the company!

After my first week, I knew this job was not the right fit for me and gave notice. The plant manager yelled at me and said I had wasted their time and would now need to spend additional funds to re-post the position.

What made this the worst job for me is that the surroundings were so depressing and it looked like everyone had a gray pallor about them, as if they were beaten down. I had a vision of myself becoming one of those people and I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Tips and Tricks

  • I don’t think I would have done anything differently. I applied for the position because, according to the job description, it fit my job qualifications perfectly. It wasn’t until I actually got into the position and found out about the lack of technical capabilities (email) and the dour environment, that I knew the job wasn’t for me. I stand by my decision.
