Share the Worst Job You've Ever Had
I stood at a wooden table in the middle of a beer distribution facility all day cleaning sticky glass off of broken beer bottles with a cold, wet rag so that the unbroken bottles from cases of beer and six packs could be then repacked in carriers by me and then hot glued into cases and then shipped out. They piped in pop country music all day, and there was a toothless mean spirited woman named Melba who chain smoked Virginia Slims all day behind me doing nothing really. I also had to walk 3 miles to this job and back in the cold, slushy, crappy winter in Lawrence KS for part of the duration. I made $8 an hour.
What Made This Job Your Worst Job - Ever
The incessant bordeom, constant wet cold brutally cut up hands. Aching back from the concrete floor. Constantly being surrounded by some of the most ignorant attitudes I have ever known a person to have. Knowing I could do something far better if only given the opportunity. The wafting of the nasty cigarette smoke and the cackle of Melba's laugh at racist jokes by truck drivers. The marginal pay and no benefits. No other person to socialize with. Above all I knew I was putting old beer into unsuspecting customers' baskets.
Tips and Tricks
- Lobby for a job that used my brain, and didn't turn my hands into a scarification ritual daily. I also would've quit earlier realizing I deserved something better. I would've spoken to Billy more, a truck driver of Native American Heritage who was a super nice guy and I really liked hanging with on the rare occasion that I was able to go on delivery runs. I would've asked that Melba tone down the ignorance if possible, but I was just a kid who needed to support himself by any means necessary.
