When you decide to go back to school full-time, sometimes it's best to quit your job. While some employees work full-time when returning to school for additional studies or to earn a degree, others can't handle the combination of work, school, and often, family responsibilities. These employees feel that their resignation from their employment is their best option. There are sample resignation letters for an employee who is returning to school.

How to Write a Resignation Letter

What should you include in your resignation letter? And where should you place it?

Note

Be professional and pleasant. Begin by stating how much you enjoy working at the company you're leaving. Then tell your employer that you’ve made the decision to return to school. Explain that given time considerations, you would be unable to both return to school and do justice to your current job, and your family relationships, too.

While giving your two weeks' notice, mention the last day you will work for the company, so there's no ambiguity in your employer's understanding that you are quitting your job. If you'd like, keep the door open by saying you’d like to return to the company in the future.

You may want to rejoin the company later, even if it's not in the same position, and there's no need to burn any bridges. You may want to leave your options open. especially if you have enjoyed working for your current employer.

Dear Ms. Lau,

I have had to make the difficult decision that I cannot continue to work as an assistant while I return to school full time to earn my bachelor's degree. It would not be fair to you, as my employer, nor to my family or my studies.

Consequently, this is my letter of resignation. I plan to work until September 15, 2020. This fulfills my two weeks' notice and allows me to concentrate on school full time when the semester begins.

Working at Acme Corporation has provided me with many opportunities to develop my skills and career. I will miss my coworkers a great deal upon my return to school. I trust that I have contributed to the company's success through my efforts.

I hope that I am leaving on positive terms and that I may be in touch in the future. While circumstances will change over the next two years while I complete my degree, and the future is impossible to predict, [Optional:] If all works out, I will plan to re-apply for employment with the firm after graduation.

Best wishes to you, my coworkers, and Acme Corporation for continued success.

In the meantime, I want to help you make the integration of a new employee go as smoothly as possible. Please let me know how I can best assist with the transition of my job and responsibilities to another employee.

I will miss my employment with the company and wish you all the best.

Regards,

Dear Tom,

This letter is my official letter of resignation. I have enjoyed working in your office very much indeed this past couple of years. I have spent enough time in the field though to know that a dental assistant's job is not as fulfilling as the position of a dental hygienist. Consequently, I am returning to school to complete my degree as a hygienist. This will require a full-time commitment of my time.

This degree will also afford me the opportunity to work part-time when my husband and I start a family in the future. So, while I think about the future and earning this degree, it is a positive life choice for me.

I appreciate working in your practice since it gave me the ability to explore my interest in the field. Once I have graduated, possibly you will need a dental hygienist. We have worked so well together that I would be pleased to rejoin your practice in a different position.

I will also miss my coworkers who have contributed to a harmonious workplace.

My last day will be June 30, 2020, so if we start recruiting immediately, I am allowing some extra time so I can train my replacement for you.

Regards,

Sarah Johnson
