How can you help a colleague or reporting staff member choose motivation? You take steps to create a work environment that provides the greatest possibility for employees to choose motivation. A motivating work environment provides a strategic framework so people know what is expected from them.
In his landmark book, Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed to Do and What to Do about It (Compare Prices), Ferdinand Fournies first reason is that they dont know what they are supposed to do. Lacking the necessary strategic direction, employees are unclear about their personal goals and objectives. The organization feels rudderless. Or, worse, the goals and direction change daily. The employees scramble to switch gears. The result is often too many goals, no priority placed on the existing goals and the feeling that all of the goals, regardless of their importance, must be accomplished. When results are monitored, baby steps toward accomplishing each goal are evident, but no goals are completed. For a motivating work environment, a strategic framework in which employees know the vision, mission, goals and action plans is required. Employees with strategic direction are motivated to succeed.
