Contact Susan Heathfield, About.com's Human Resources Guide

Like all of the editors and writers at About.com, I'm a real person. I do my best to read all of my email and I enjoy hearing from visitors to my site. But, as much as I enjoy receiving your messages, I can't always answer every message. This is due to the sheer volume of email I receive every day from all over the world.

This is also because, as one person, I do not have knowledge about nor access to information about all of the laws and customs of the location from which you write to me.

As a visitor to the site, you have access to my Forum in which you will find a group of professionals who are also happy to answer questions. So, always post your question in the Forum for possible responses, too.

Human Resources Site: Mission, Purpose, and Audience

The mission of this site is to provide accurate, thoughtful, forward looking information for people who wish to stretch their imagination to encompass a new vision about how people with people and people with the work place can interrelate most successfully.

This Human Resources site offers support and assistance to four types of visitors:

  • People who work in or manage any aspect of human resources including training, organization development, benefits, and more; (The site offers resources for people who are beginners, mid-career, and later-career professionals.)

  • People who manage, lead, or supervise people;

  • People who want to increase their personal or career effectiveness and success; and

  • People who want to improve their ability to work effectively with people at work.

You will find answers to frequently asked questions about this site, as well as how to find human resources information and resources, below.

F.A.Q.

Q. How to Get Started?
A. Visit the Human Resources and Management OneStop Center for an overview and paths through the site.

Q. Interested in the Most Basic Information About Human Resources?

A. Visit the Human Resources: General Questions and Answers page.
Q. Interested in Reprinting Articles From About.com Human Resources?
A. The New York Times handles reprint requests and fees. Please review the instructions at: Reprint Requests.
Q. Looking for an Answer?
A. Find information on the Human Resources site:

  • Use the categories on the left side of the homepage and the bottom of each page.
  • Type words into the search box at the top right of each page.
  • Browse paths listed on the tabs.
Because of the volume of email I receive, I cannot answer your individual questions. Occasionally, I answer a question that might have universal implications for other site visitors, most frequently as an article, not individually. I am unable to help with research or homework.
Q. Need Answers or Fellow Professionals With Whom You Can Interact?
A. Post your questions and comments on the About.com Human Resources Forum. It's a great place to get help from and interact with career professionals, fellow working people, and human resources practitioners. Post your questions or comments and you'll receive input from a variety of voices.
Q. Link Requests?
A. Link requests are considered only if your content provides value in addition to what is available on this site. Please consider adding a link to this site from your site. If you are interested in assured audience reach, consider advertising on the HR site.
Q. Review Resumes?
A. I am unable to review your resume, cover letters, or credentials. I do not advertise jobs on the website although you are welcome to post them on the HR Community Connection Forum.
Q. Review Your Policies, Offer Legal Opinions, or Research Questions?
A. Because I do not have knowledge of laws and customs in all of the United States and internationally, I cannot always answer your questions. In a work or interpersonal problem-related email, I have access to only one party's point of view, so I am unable to coach your individual situation. It is impossible for me to do specific research to answer your questions. However, an interesting question, that affects many readers, may be answered in a subsequent article, or on the Forum, so keep reading.
Q. Legal Disclaimer?
A. I am not a lawyer so all information on the site, while authoritative, is not guaranteed for accuracy and legality. The sample policies and opinions are provided for guidance only. While I make every effort to provide and link accurate, legal, and complete information, I cannot guarantee it is correct. Please seek legal assistance, or assistance from State, Federal, or International governmental resources, to make certain your legal interpretation and decisions are correct.
Q. Media Contacts, Book Reviews, Speaking, Writing, or Consulting Engagements?
A. Susan Heathfield is available for interviews, with as much notice as possible, to be responsive. She also occasionally reviews books; because of the number of books she receives, she is unable to review all of them. Susan is available for speaking, consulting, training, and writing engagements on any of the topics covered on this Web site. Please send an email with "Press Request" as the subject line. Susan will respond as quickly as possible. Sorry, but same day is only sometimes possible.
Q. Email Your Guide?
A. Contact me: Email the Guide. I do welcome your comments and questions about Human Resources and I appreciate your understanding that I can't always provide personal service in response to your questions. However, I do check the Human Resources Forum regularly as does HRJohn, our Forum host, and if you post your question, we'll do our best to respond.
