What Would an HR Hero Do?

This is an opportunity for you to take a look at common Human Resources situations and decide upon an appropriate course of action. As a response to each brief scenario, you will decide upon one of three courses of action. One of the options is the preferred or optimal response for forward thinking Human Resources professionals.

The other two responses are not necessarily wrong. In fact, they may be adequate approaches to solving the problem or taking advantage of the opportunity. They are just not optimal for your success and the success of your organization.

For the optimal response to the scenario, background and support information is provided. You can follow the links to reference material from About Human Resources, other About Guides, or the World Wide Web. In all cases, I have provided material that will help you understand why I recommend the preferred option.

For the options that are not preferred, I have provided a brief rationale. Occasionally, you will find a link to additional information.

Thoughts About the Future

If this feature proves popular with site visitors, I will regularly create new scenarios. I will also hold a contest so readers can participate in developing the scenarios. Please let me know what you think in the Forum.

How to Take the HR Challenge!

Read each scenario. Read the three responses to the scenario that follow. Select your preferred response by clicking on Response A, Response B, or Response C. You will arrive on a page that provides you with feedback about your choice. You will find links to the other possible responses and to the next scenario. Follow the provided links to additional information and reference material.

Please note: Because all human resources and management issues are situational, depending on the capabilities of the people involved, the past history of the individuals and the organization, and the outcome desired by all parties, these scenario responses provide general guidelines. You will need to be sensitive to the individual needs of the situation should similar circumstances occur in your organization. Additionally, the responses are my opinions!
