Hear That Whooshing Sound?

By January 7, 2014

Follow me on:

Hear that whooshing sound? It's the sound of your plans and dreams, your hopes and schemes, your goals and resolutions passing by as you wallow in the quagmire of procrastination. Don't sink there. Get started on 2014.

My procrastination arises most of the time when I have taken on a large project that requires blocks of dedicated, uninterrupted time, a commodity that has been short in my life this year. My solution?

First, I try to eliminate the factors that are interrupting and causing my time loss. Then, I have learned that I need to break the project down into doable chunks that I can get my arms around. I can easily write an article or find resources on one topic, but a book or a resource library are difficult to approach.

More Reasons for Procrastination

A second reason I procrastinate is when I am not sure how to approach / solve an issue. This is a distant second to my first reason, though. And, since I first developed this poll, another reason for procrastination has occurred frequently in my work with clients. People procrastinate when they think they know the outcome of a project or a process, and they are afraid that it is the wrong answer.

If not the wrong answer, they know that their solution will be unacceptable in their organization. Consequently, they fail to reach and share the solution, timeline, or steps, because they know that the answer they will suggest is the wrong answer. This fear, and thus the procrastination, is compounded, if the employees believe that they have experienced a similar situation in the past. This is called learning.

Do You Procrastinate, Too?

How about you? Do you procrastinate, too? Found any solutions that work for you?

Please take the time to vote in my poll.

I procrastinate when I cannot visualize the project, meaning I cannot determine what the end result should look like nor the path to get there.

I don’t think not moving forward because those co-workers keep changing the goal-line is procrastination. It is lack of coordination of objectives. A leader in the group has to help the group define what it wants, how to get there and how to coordinate all the efforts to get there. Of course there always needs to be some mid-course correction but a good leader will engage the key group members so they all understand the reason for the direction change.
