Are You Making a List?

Santa with a List

It's gift giving season. Who better to gift than yourself? I've been messing around with holiday ideas in my mind - after all, who can help it with the ho, ho, ho, and the merry, merry, merry all around you at this time of the year?

Not to mention shopping for presents and by-passing most of the expensive holiday treats in the glossy catalogs... And, feeling virtuous because I froze half of the hand-made toffee...

And, it seems to me that we need to spend a bit of time this year thinking about presents to give ourselves for the New Year. So, I'll start out today with the first recommended gift with a big thank you to Seth Godin for the concept.

Do You Have a List?

Are you keeping a list? Employers who hire the best employees have a prequalified candidate pool that they can draw from when they need a new employee. Need a software developer? Hopefully, you've cultivated the associates of your current employees - and they have; tapped their social networks, such as LinkedIn and Facebook, in advance; and generally kept your eyes open to identify awesome candidates.

How about that resume you received from the candidate who doesn't match your current job opening qualifications, but who looks amazing on paper? Do you call him or her up and schedule a get-to-know interview for future positions? Is he or she on your list?

Stay in Touch With Your List

And, how do you maintain contact with these potential employees? Are you connected on LinkedIn? Do you sign the candidate up for your company newsletter? Do you periodically email good news about your company or congratulate the candidate when you see good news about him?

You'll feel secure, comfortable, and stress free, when expansion warrants hiring or an employment resignation leaves you without a key player. Your list should have the names of potential employees to fill all of your key positions.

Gift yourself for the New Year with a list; keep in touch with the prospects on your list. When recruitment time comes, you'll cherish the talent you've cultivated and save time on your journey to hire a superior employee.
