To be an employer of choice, you need to do a whole lot right. Employees watch your every move and it’s not fun to have your company or your employees complained about on an employee’s Facebook wall. But, hey, it happens. Since our employees’ lives outside of work are not my business unless they flow over into and affect work, people are entitled to their opinions.
To be a good employer, though, you need to pay attention to the environment you create for employees and for applicants to your company. I think some readers misunderstood part of my point in an earlier blog post about employee satisfaction. The key point was that if the employer has created an employee-friendly environment in which people have the opportunity to experience the five factors every employee wants from work, satisfaction is the employee’s responsibility within that positive work environment.
I was not referring to employee-unfriendly environments. But, would an employer with that kind of environment even worry about employee satisfaction? That’s a good question.

It’s not that people “misunderstood” your previous blog post Susan. It just wasn’t a very good post. You can’t separate employee satisfaction from being a good employer and throw all the responsibility onto your employees. That’s so short-sighted. Every workplace is different and it’s our responsibility as employers to understand our own cultures. You were trying to be too cute by half. Didn’t work. Now you’re trying to blame us for not understanding, just like you were blaming employees for not being satisfied all on their own.
