It's scary out there without a job. About.com's Job Search site tracks unemployment extensions and over 900 readers have shared their concerns. With so many unemployed, now is not the time to quit your job even if my ten recommended reasons to quit your job are happening in your workplace.

The better question in 2009 is to ask how you can keep the job you have. I recognize that a lot of people are not happy with their current job – frequently because they are unhappy with their “bad” boss.

You need only read the comments on my poll about bad bosses or the reader responses to my article about bad bosses to see how prevalent they are in the workplace. I did respond to the comment thread about the poll, but you’ll need to scroll to comment #71 to see what I had to say about stealth job searching – recommended during an economic downturn when you want to keep your job.

While you secretly search for a new job, you’ll want to do everything in your power to keep your job. I make ten recommendations about how you can safeguard and recession-proof your current job.

Becoming the "go to" person who has information coworkers need helps. So does exhibiting all the positive employee traits and skills you'd like to see in your coworkers. But, of all the critically important factors, because bosses are human, too, the most important is to have an excellent relationship with the person you fondly - or not - call boss.
