Downsizing Survivors

On last night’s news, Ford announced that the company is laying off up to 12% of their white collar work force, about 2,000 people. This comes on top of layoffs recently announced by companies such as Ford earlier, Sprint, AT&T, and Sun.

When layoffs are looming in many workplaces, there are important factors to keep in mind. How you treat the people you are laying off matters to them so they can grieve and recover more quickly. It matters to the staff members who remain because they are going to live on in your employ and your actions will forever color their thinking of you as an employer of choice. It already makes people fearful when they see coworkers laid off; make sure you don’t encourage the fear.
