At one point or another in your career, you will report to a manager, the person you fondly - or not - call boss. Since bosses are human, they sometimes lack skills in managing people. So you can have a bad boss. No matter how bad your boss, however, while you work with him or her, you still need to build an effective working relationship.

The relationships that you create and manage, with both your immediate supervisor and other employees who have managerial or leadership responsibility in your company, are critical for your work success and career progress. And, face it, whether you like it or not, you're in charge of your relationship with your boss. No one will ever share as much concern as you do that the quality of the relationship helps you achieve your goals. At the same time, your boss has information that you need to succeed. He can't do his job or accomplish his goals without your help.

So, your manager shares a critical interdependence with you. If you don't accomplish your work, your manager will never shine for his or her overall responsibilities. You won't progress without the information, perspective, experience, and support of your manager.

I need help. I resigned two weeks ago. During a meeting, my boss asked if I present him with areas of improvement for the organization before I leave. Areas of improvement!?! I have a million reasons why I am leaving my job, among them, it is a hostile work environment. How do I get out of this question, or answer it with grace and respect! Please help!

love or hate your boss, they control your future to some degree. letting them know how much smarter you are than they are … how much you hate your job … not to mention how “special” you are … are guaranteed to make your life more difficult. have a good attitude and do the best you can — even the worst boss in the world will come around, or at least be tolerable until you can find another job.

Your article on the relationship with bosses was timely and superb. The article pointed out some very good points on communicating with bosses. I’ve started a new job in Training and Development. I took some initiatives with my new position. I didn’t inform my two bosses of my doings. My actions were innocent but I could’ve informed them of my doings. I was corrected by both of them. I read your article and it helped me.
Thanks.
