The Impact of the Minimum Wage Increase On You?

Saturday July 21, 2007

Poll: Will the Minimum Wage Increases Adversely Affect Your Company?

The increase in the minimum wage on July 24, 2007 from $5.15 to $5.85 an hour, is expected to have minimal impact on most employers nation-wide, according to CCH Internet Research Network, part of Wolters Kluwer Law & Business. That's because 32 states and the District of Columbia have already established minimum wage levels higher than the new federal level.

Additionally, as employers seek to attract talented employees, the inavailability of qualified employees has caused many employers to raise wages beyond both their state and federal minimum wage requirements. In fact, in one poll cited in my newest article, The Impact of the Minimum Wage Increase, the majority of small business owners did not know the minimum wage required in their state.

The minimum wage will increase again to $6.55 on July 24, 2008, and to $7.25 per hour on July 24, 2009. It is the first increase in the federal minimum wage in a decade.

I live in Southern California, and since I started working the state minimum wage has always been higher. Even though I did it 10 years ago, I can’t imagine trying to survive on a minimum wage job today. Heck, I can barely support my husband and myself making more than twice the 2009 Fed Min wage right now.

I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I imagine that there are people here that work for minimum wage. I can’t even imagine what it takes to support a person, let a lone a family for less annually than most people pay for thier vehicles. I think it’s about time the government made a move to ensure a better way of life for Americans.

We have had the minimum wage in Australia for a number of years now and I really believe it has put a stop to organisations underpaying innocent people who just want to earn a living.

(4) Susie says:

I am an employer that starts my new employees above minimum wage, because nobody will work for minimum wage. With the new increase I will need to raise my starting pay as well as my existing employee pay in order to maintain seniority.

(5) Rob says:

Minimum wage is designed for entry level positions. People are not supposed to be supprting families on minimum wage, it’s for 16 year old who get jobs over the summer and unskilled temporary jobs. Adults and families are supposed to gains skills and abilities to get higher paying jobs. Raising the minimum wage negatively affects the economic balance of the workforce, devaluing the dollar and making higher wages worth less.

(6) Annie says:

There are all kinds of reasons why people have to accept jobs, paying minumum wage or slightly higher. It isn’t just 16 year olds & uneducated people.Try living in Mississippi. The cost of living keeps getting higher but pay is still so low, for the work done.
