How Real Women Get Ahead: Woman's Advantage at Work

Monday June 11, 2007
Did you ever have a work day during which you had so much to do, it was hard to get to anything? That's how I feel about writing this week. There are so many stories swimming around in my head that I am having trouble getting started on any of them. Women and technology careers has been on my mind since I attended the Microsoft TechEd Women in Technology luncheon. So, I've been blogging about that for the past few days at Career Savvy. A second topic, on my mind, has been women and management, in general.

Forget what you’ve heard about “being one of the boys,” “having it all,” and “going for the jugular.” Here is how real women get ahead. Not by asking how to get peer employees to respect their view point, but by having a well-expressed, admirable view point. See the difference?

Don't ask, how can I get my fellow executives to respect me, instead, make a significant contribution to the profitability of the business and you will own their respect. Do you really want to play poker twice a month as does one of the women at the conference or join the biker boys for motorcycle trips on the weekend? Not unless you are truly interested in these activities.

Real women get ahead pretty similarly to how real men do. Work hard, work smart, favor your strengths, and add value to the business.
