See "Debunking Some Hot Business Books"

Saturday March 24, 2007
May I confide in you? Most of what I write about on this Web site is the application of common sense in work settings. I don't like most business books I read because they generally build a case around a consultant's favorite strategy or buzz word. And, every one of them has to have some angle to get published and attract readers, so they find one.

Or, another raft of business books features CEOs who apparently executed brilliant strategy that was carried out in fifteen traumatic steps. They confide these steps to readers as if they had planned their course of action from the beginning rather than retrospectively telling a story.

So, it was refreshing to find this Forbes.com article, "Debunking Some Hot Business Books", by Professor Phil Rosenzweig, who says:

"While there are plenty of books that promise the keys to business success, Rosenzweig advises managers to retain a healthy dose of skepticism when reading them. 'Some of the biggest business blockbusters of recent years contain not one or two, but several delusions,' he writes. 'For all their claims of scientific rigor, for all their lengthy descriptions of apparently solid and careful research, they operate mainly at the level of storytelling. They offer tales of inspiration that we find comforting and satisfying, but they're based on shaky thinking.'"
Take a look at the article which I learned about on the Know HR Blog by Frank Roche. I enjoy this blog.
