Second Life: Want a Second Chance to Get a Life?

By January 17, 2007

Follow me on:

Although Second Life, a 3D virtual world, has been around since 2003, its fame multiplied in the past few months after the announcement that virtual real-estate developer Anshe Chung made a million dollars buying and selling real estate in the virtual world, Second Life. I’ve been looking around in Second Life since November when Betsy Weber, TechSmith’s Chief Evangelist, introduced me to the world. Second Life is a 3D virtual world where you use an avatar, a virtual you, to explore the world and communicate with other people. You can view an interesting screencast about the world on Betsy’s Visual Lounge Blog.

As you know, I am partial to entrepreneurs, and SecondLife promises great opportunities for small business. So far, I think Second Life has potential for business networking, training and development, company meetings with worldwide participants, and online planning sessions. Additionally, some big players, such as Amazon.com, have started businesses in the virtual world but the list of entrepreneurial opportunities grows every day. Check it out while the opportunities continue to grow. While my whole site can be used by small business, all of my articles specifically for small business are available for your perusal, too.

My company has gotten very involved with Second Life, having created a virtual Capitol Hill where we streamed video of the swearing in ceremonies of Nancy Pelosi and the 110th Congress in-world. The virtual Capitol Hill is designed to provide a forum for in-world discussions of the initiatives recently announced by the Democratic Party.

Our company also conducts online discussions at Clear Island. Drop in and visit us sometime.

Thanks for the invitation. As I learn more and explore more in Second Life, I’ll stop by. I think the possibilities are amazing.

It is always hard to start from scratch. There are a lot of grants out there for people who want a fresh start and to open a new buisness. I suggests going into your local resource center or federal building and ask them to give you a start on what you need to get applications for grants. There is also a lot of schools that are willing to help pay to open a buisness if you take a few classes in the field of work you want to have.
