Weekly Poll: Work Place Negativity
Tuesday May 23, 2006
Negativity, and the causes of negativity, have long been favorite topics on my site. I believe that the majority of work places must be challenging for people because this is such a popular topic. I have written about the causes of negativity in The Five Causes of Employee Negativity.

This week’s poll focuses on identifying the most common causes of negativity in your work place. I have suggested several but would be interested in your comments about work place negativity, too.

We have a girl in the office that is couseing alot of bad gossip and really low morale. When it all stated we all found out that she was sleeping with a co worker that held a high place in the department (I was the one you they straight out told) but I didn’t say anything to anyone because it really was none of my business. Well I didn’t have to because word got out anyways. Well this girl is 20 and so now she is walking around the office like shes above everyone else and she has a one year old son so she gets to make her own schedule and she leave mid day 4 days out of the week because she doesn’t feel good. The low morale is comeing from watching this girl walk all over us and the rest of the department having to pick up her slack. Is there anything we can do about the low morale.
Stress helps to cause most of the other symptoms. As managment is stressed, each has his or her breakdown of appropriate responses to the situation. Each at different levels and different times. Most common is comunications breakdowns. Why?? CLEAR communications to another human being requires calm, clear, orderly thought and is,in it self,a stressor.Have somone give an impromptue speech who says it isn’t. One on one is only a smaller scale of stress.
(A petite morte)
This breakdown frequently is the vehicle that exacerbates the problems and couples stress to the employees. If not controlled in it’s infancy, the work place can become a black pit of despair.
I have all of these reasons in my current postion but I try to make the best of work each day. I just do not seem to understand why management does not see the causes for the low morale…. Managers, HR, need to open their eyes to the real problems in their agencies.
This is a major problem in companies today and should be addressed accordingly so that people are able to express their opinions and not go around being afraid of confronting the negativity.
