What Brings You Joy?

Thursday May 4, 2006
Today, I attended a luncheon for a departing employee. I am sorry she is leaving but also convinced she is leaving for a much better benefits package. As a single mother, she needs the change. Yet, she indicates that she has experienced much joy in working with us. What brings you great joy in the workplace? I know what brings me joy. Perhaps we share meaning about joyful events and circumstances? I trust that in sharing mine, I remind you of yours. It's easy to get so bogged down in the day-to-day busy that we forget to cherish the best moments. What motivates the motivators? Here are some of mine: What Brings You Joy? Please reply in "comments" below.

RE What brings you joy? I have worked in aging services for well over 27 years. I have moved to a position that puts me over in sales & marketing of home care services. That was a mistake, direct contact with the aged is what brings me joy and it took a “bad” move to make me appreciate how much joy I experience working in direct contact with the elderly. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to return to my “joy” without taking a big hit in pay. Thanks for the opportunity to acknowledge the importance of “joy” in work.

As an elementary school math and reading tutor it brings me great joy to see a child put the pieces together and grasp a concept that they’ve been struggling to master. There’s no greater joy than seeing a child smile and their eyes light when they finally get it. Teachers make every other profession possible!

Right now, not much. I am in the wrong job, with the wrong employer. This has shown me where I need to be. I hope I can leave here soon.

Being acknowledged for a job well done. Being respected for my opinion or experience. Being involved in decisions that help the company grow.

Unfortunately none of those things are happening now. So joy is working with a career coach to figure out what my next move is going to be.
