Tips for Managing Stress and Change at Work

Tuesday May 2, 2006
Stress is normal. Everyone feels stress related to work, family, decisions, your future, and more. Stress is both physical and mental. It is caused by major life events such as illness, the death of a loved one, a change in responsibilities or expectations at work, and job promotions, loss, or changes. Stress is also caused by seemingly small things. I had several staff members in tears for much of Thursday because another staff member sent a note to the whole company. The note thanked five people for their help on the current fund raising for the March of Dimes. The note ignored the contributions of many other people. They were the ones in tears. I need to deal with this.

The first reaction of many was to eliminate the all-company email option; this is not in keeping with my philosophy that you should never restrict the options of the many for the actions of the few. At the same time, I will publish all-company email guidelines. We will also talk with the employee who caused pain for so many. We may even restrict her email access. This is a tough one because the employee who sent the hurtful email is valued and did a great job fund raising. The stress she caused may not be worth it, however. Read on to understand the impact of stress and stress in the workplace. Learn more by Understanding What Causes Stress and Workplace Stress.
