Business Ethics Always Matter

Tuesday March 14, 2006
Even the smallest employer, in tragic circumstances, can be employee-friendly. Craig Banwell, the owner of the Williamston Bucket, which was destroyed in a recent fire, plans to keep his employees on the payroll while they rebuild the business. This echoes the famous story of Aaron Feuerstein, the CEO of Malden Mills, who in 1995, decided to keep 3,000 employees on his payroll while rebuilding the mill following a fire. His story didn’t end as happily as I would have liked – he later filed for bankruptcy in 2001 – but his ethical treatment of employees earned him well-deserved national attention for his generosity and kindness. This attention continues today. Mr. Feuerstein was recently awarded the Stanley C. Pace Leadership in Ethics Award.
