Policy Samples and Examples

Tuesday August 31, 2004
Writing a whole new employee handbook is challenging in the face of increased litigation. Plus, I am deeply committed to the need to fairly and consistently treat employees yet not hobble my organizations in their ability to be kind and ethical. Sometimes, that's quite a balance. In one client company, we have recruited an ethnically diverse group of employees.
From countries all around the world, our employees need time off to go home to visit families. The time they need is inconsistent with our needs for production and the attendance policy.

Rather than letting good employees go, we developed an unpaid leave of absence that people can use for visits home to, for example, Peru or Eastern Europe. It's working. It's a win-win. Now, I just need to define the conditions under which we grant such a leave. Watch for new policy samples as my project continues. In the meantime, visit the site's most popular page: Policy Samples and Examples.
