Five Tips for Employee Recognition

Tuesday July 8, 2003

In a client company, the supervisors developed a "thank you" process. They first created the criteria that made an employee eligible for a card and gift. Then, they decided upon the card and the gifts. Cards are handwritten by the supervisor. They list the exact action, behavior, or contribution the supervisor is rewarding.

The gifts are items such as a silver dollar, a company t-shirt, fast food gift certificates, logoed pens and candy goody bags. Employees show their thank you card at the Human Resources office and draw the name of their gift from a box.

Staff members try to make the moment special. The "thank you" recipient is logged into a recognition file. Periodically, company executives visit the employees at their work stations to thank them for their contribution.

The process works. The employees really like it. I like it because it meets my criteria for effective recognition. Read more about recognition: Five Tips for Employee Recognition.
